The National Institute of Transparency, Access to Information and Protection of Personal Data (INAI) has indicated that the Federal Educational Authority in Mexico City (AEFCM) must conduct a new thorough search and provide statistics on complaints or claims of sexual abuse or attempts of sexual abuse in public primary schools in the capital.
The resolution arises from a complaint filed with INAI, after AEFCM, an administrative body decentralized from the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP), claimed it did not have the required data, arguing that it did not generate such statistics. However, INAI, through the presentation of Commissioner Blanca Lilia Ibarra Cadena, confirmed that AEFCM did not conduct a thorough search in all its competent administrative units.
“To protect our girls, boys, and adolescents from any type of violence, especially sexual violence, participation from both the public and private sectors is required; without that mutual support and societal responsibility, the goal would not be achieved and thus more girls, boys, and adolescents would suffer the harmful effects of sexual violence,” expressed Commissioner Ibarra Cadena while presenting the case.
In a unanimous decision, the Plenary of INAI modified the AEFCM's response, demanding that it conduct a new search for the information and deliver it to the requester. This includes statistics on primary schools with the highest number of complaints, reports, or claims related to abuse or attempts of sexual abuse, as well as the names of the primary schools where the cases have occurred.
